Leeds Castle is situated in Kent, and is approximately a 2 hour coach trip south from Colchester Town.
The castle has a rich history spanning about 1,000 years. Today the castle is one of the most visited historic buildings in Britain. It is actually possible to experience a ‘dine & sleep’ event at the castle to bask in the true atmosphere of the historical precinct. Many events are held throughout the year that you can sample, but of course they are prestigiously priced and so as a student I won’t have a chance to discover them at the moment.
As a law student, I haven’t had the opportunity to study much history or classic English literature, however I was lucky to have 3 travel companions with a proficient background to guide me along. They definitely helped increase my appreciation of the historical aspect of Leeds Castle.
The castle throughout the years has actually been the private property of six of England’s medieval queens; a palace used by Henry VIII and his first wife Catherine of Aragon; a Jacobean country house; a Georgian mansion; and an elegant early 20th century retreat for the influential and famous.
After the magnificent tour, we roamed the 500-acre gardens surrounding the castle and made many comparisons to Game of Thrones.
We discovered a children’s corner that houses a maze which we instantly started comparing to the maze in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Naturally, we all thought it would be an easy feat, as many children under 5 seemed to be finding their way relatively quickly and without issue. However, after roaming about for 10 minutes we embarrassingly had to secure the help of the lady running the maze from the centre castle to find our way to the top!
Tip 9: When in England, remember to compare everything you see to anything and everything that has to do with Harry Potter and / or Game of Thrones.
After our proud moment at the centre of the maze, we were glad to hear there was a quick way out of the maze. What we didn’t expect was the exit being a tunnel that goes underground and has scary faces on the walls, which eerily resemble the dark mark.
At this point it really felt as though dementor’s would be coming out of the depths and eating our souls.
